Blocked By Snow

Not only disease, but weather
proved to be an intermittent barrier
to the work of doctors in his
day. During the big snow of
1899, Dr. Hedges set out in his
buggy and found the way blocked
by drifts. Packing the equipment
on his back, he forged on
through the snowstorm to his
patient's house.

With the building of a dispensary
located on the site now
occupied by the George Rogers
Clarke monument on Main Street,
Dr. Hedges helped to initiate the
combination of practical instruction
with the traditional theoretical
approach to medicine.
