The servant of the Muse, gifted and grac'd
With high pre-eminence of art and taste,
Has an allotted duty to fulfil;
Bound to dispense the treasure of his skill,
Without a selfish or invidious view;
Bound to recite, and to compose anew;
Not to reserve his talent for himself,
In secret, like a miser with his pelf.
