Thus some in eighteen twenty thought,
When first the Compromise was sought,
And prophecied continual evil
If shared by Freedom and the devil.
But scores of patriots of that day
Conceived a far more excellent way
To stay at once the threat'ning blow
And satisfy the parties too.
Some, from the North with doughy faces,
Said, Circumstances altered cases;
And Compromises they must make
For their beloved country's sake.
