INSCRIPTION,

FOR THE PORTRAIT OF FISHER AMES, PAINTED CON AMORE BY STUART.

Such is the man!—inspired the artist wrought,
And reached with soaring mind his flight of thought.
Then bid the brow's reflective calm declare,
Majestic honour dwells unquestioned there.
Mild from that eye the rays of kindness flow,
Warm on those lips the words of fervour glow,
Yet with persuasion's pensive charm appear,
To win the plaudit of a nation's tear.
Sublime of soul! in speaking features shine,
Feeling's fine flame, and eloquence divine.
Such is the man; beheld, approached, approved!
Born to excel—yet less admired than loved.

See his pathetic speech on the British Treaty, as published in his works.
