PRAYER AND ITS EFFECTS.

[“Prayer is the breath of God in man]

“Prayer is the breath of God in man,
Returning whence it came;
Love is the sacred fire within,
And prayer the rising flame.
“It gives the burdened spirit ease,
And soothes the troubled breast;
Yields comfort to the mourners here,
And to the weary rest.”

99

[“My soul, be on thy guard]

“My soul, be on thy guard;
Ten thousand foes arise;
The hosts of sin are pressing hard
To draw thee from the skies.
“Oh, watch and fight and pray;
The battle ne'er giver o'er;
Renew it boldly every day,
And help divine implore.
“Ne'er think the victory won,
Nor lay thine armor down;
Thy arduous work will not be done
Till thou obtain thy crown.”

104

[“Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice]

“Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice
Returning from his ways,
While angels in their songs rejoice,
And cry, Behold, he prays.

105

“Prayer is the Christian's vital breath,
The Christian's native air,
His watchword at the gates of death;
He enters heaven with prayer.”
