'Arthur Hall Ensemble'

Afro-American Dance
Plays Here Tomorrow

Sponsored by the local chapter
of the Virginia Museum of Fine
Arts, "The Arthur Hall
Afro-American Dance Ensemble"
will present an evening of African
Dance on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 8:15
p.m. in Lane High School Auditorium.

This company's vivid repertoire
represents an energetic attempt to
communicate the spirit and
deep-rooted traditions of black culture
to the contemporary audience.
With this goal in mind, the ensemble
performs with stamina, virtuosity,
and an expressive dignity.
"Joyous! Altogether entertaining,"
was the enthusiastic response of
Walter Terry, dance critic of "The
Saturday Review." As Hall, himself,
has emphasized, "We use the whole
spectrum to relate what black
means in terms of the dance. We
live it."

The evening's program will include:
a Stool Dance, Watusi,
Ticheri (a religious cult dance),
Hyena (the ceremonial taming of
that animal), King of the White
Cloth, Agong and Fetish, Fanga,
and Snake. It will culminate with
the famous "Challenge", in which
the dancers try to out do the drummers
and the drummers to out-play
the dancers.

Tickets for "The Arthur Hall
Afro-American Dance Ensemble"
are available at Mincers', Newcomb
Hall, Leggett in the Barracks Road
Shopping Center, and at the door
before the performance.
