Dylan Thomas Play,
Fine Arts Scheduled

By David Murphy
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

"In Search of Dylan," a play
about the famous Welsh poet Dylan
Thomas, will be performed on next
Tuesday evening, April 15 at 8:15,
at Lane High School Auditorium.

The play explores the vast and
fascinating talent of Dylan Thomas
who has been the subject of
numerous literary and theatrical
since his untimely death several
years ago.

Kay Britten,
actress-singer-guitarist of wide
experience - and reputation both
here and abroad, after three years
of research has produced a sensitive
and knowing portrait of Mr. Thomas
that may be the most articulate
statement to date on this complicated
artist.

The play reveals a tortured
talent whose despair is linked with
a disastrous bent toward self-destruction.
But even if the real picture of
Mr. Thomas is a painful one, it is
also one of wit, ribaldry and
touching pathos. The play views the
"enfant terrible" of literature
through the eyes of his wife Caitlin.

Dylan Thomas, often described
as the greatest genius of this
century, hid his character through
mischievously contrived poses that
helped nourish the legends which so
obscured his image that it became
almost impossible to distinguish the
real man and the artist from the
"boy with a love of beer."

Miss Britten avoids passing
judgement on the life of this
extraordinary literary figure, but
rather leaves the final assessment to
the reader. The play is a
multi media college which
incorporates film with the words
and media of the play. It promises
to be an exciting evening of theater
that speaks not only to the legend
of Dylan Thomas but the mixed
forces that are the components of
creative genius.

The play is sponsored by the
Charlottesville-Albemarle Chapter
of the Virginia Museum. Tickets are
on sale at Newcomb Hall, Mincer's,
Leggett's of Barracks Road, and
Cary's Camera Shop. Admission is
$3.00, $1.50 for students.

Also, there will be a Folk
Musical play, "Good News," done
by the Young People of
Charlottesville, this Sunday night at
8 in the Lane Auditorium of Lane
High School.

The play was organized through
black and white churches of all
faiths. It is a Christian folk musical
directed towards sharing Christian
testimony. It is directed by the
choirmaster from the First Baptist
Church, Robert Renfro.

One citizen observer said that it
is, "The most significant step in
integrating the Negro and White
High School students, in a
constructive way from the
Albemarle County and city of
Charlottesville." Tickets are 50
cents at the box office.
