EPIGRAM XLII.

[Would you rise in the state, you the state must oppose]

BREVIS ESSE LABORO.

Would you rise in the state, you the state must oppose,
At measures must fret, and at ministers foam;
As they double their offers, redouble your blows;
Turn your back on all terms, till it suits you to close;
And you'll certainly find, if you follow your nose,
That the farthest way round, is the shortest way home.
