"Distinguished Work"

In appointing Dr. Crispell as one of his five
vice presidents, President Shannon said Dr.
Crispell's "distinguished work as dean has
conspicuously enhanced the quality of the
School of Medicine and increased its capacity
to advance medical science and education and
to serve the public."

Dr. Crispell first joined the University in
1949 as instructor in medicine and became an
assistant and then associate professor of
medicine. In 1960, he returned to the
University after two years as professor of
medicine and chairman of the department at
New York Medical College. He was appointed
dean in 1964.

He is on the executive council of the
Association of American Medical Colleges and a
member of the Duke University Medical Center
Board of Visitors. He has served on the
Governor's Advisory Committee for Virginia
Regional Medical Programs and is currently on
the Governor's Study Commission for Medical
Facilities in Roanoke.
