Reading Clinic To Sponsor Eleventh Annual Conference

The Eleventh Annual Reading
Conference, sponsored by the
McGuffey Reading Clinic of the
University of Virginia will be
held at University Hall on Saturday,
April 27, with registration
to begin at 8:30 a.m. The overall
conference theme will be "Reading
Instruction—A New Perspective"
and will represent an attempt
to acquaint classroom
teachers, reading specialists, administrators
and lay persons with
the latest ideas in the area of
reading instruction.

The keynote speaker will be
Dr. Joe L. Frost, University of
Texas, whose topic will be "Issues
in Reading Instruction:
Research and Implications."
Dr. Frost is the author of a
new textbook, Issues and Innovations
in the Teaching of
Reading, as well as numerous
articles on reading and related
language arts. He received his
advanced degrees from the University
of Arkansas and has
taught at that institution as well
as at the Iowa State University
and the University of Florida.

The second featured speaker
will be Dr. M. W. Sullivan,
author of the Sullivan Remedial
Reading Program. Dr. Sullivan
worked on early research into the
effectiveness of programmed instruction
at Hollins College, beginning
in 1959 and since that
time has pioneered in the development
of programmed
materials. His address will be
centered upon the use of programmed
instruction in reading.
He received his Ph. D. degree
in linguistics from the University
of Madrid.

The afternoon session of the
conference will feature Dr. Keith
D. Holmes, Director of the
Reading Laboratory at East Carolina
University. Dr. Holmes is a
specialist in language arts and is
the author of several instructional
texts, including "70 Steps
to Vocabulary Power" and
"Visual Phonic Beginning Reading
Program." His address will
include a demonstration of his
new "Sounds of English" series,
which has been hailed as a significant
breakthrough in the self-teaching
use of phonics and
linguistic skill. He received his
doctorate from Cornell University

In addition to the speakers,
the conference will feature exhibits
of the latest materials on the
teaching of reading and related
areas. Exhibits will be displayed
by thirty leading publishers and
participants will be afforded an
opportunity to discuss these materials
with publishers' representatives.
The entire conference is
open to the general public.
