The final dance means that the lovers are
spirits fluttering in the grass.
This eclogue is very incomplete. Ono
seems rather like Echo, and without the last
two lines of the chorus one could very well
imagine her keeping up her tenzone with
Shosho until the end of time.
In the performance of November 19, as
stated before, this play was followed by Manzaburo's
Suma Genji (Genji at Suma).
I must ask the reader to suspend his judgment
of the dramatic values of such plays until
he has read Nishikigi and some of the longer
eclogues, at least some of those in which the
utai or libretto set by itself conveys a fuller
sense of the meaning.
