WHEN FIRST MY FANCY.
I
When first my fancy ceased to roam,'Twas thou that fix'd it, wild before;
Thine artless smiles allured it home
And bade the truant stray no more.
'Twas beauty's bondage o'er me cast
The charm that speaks in silent eyes,
Outshining all the misty past
With hues of present Paradise.
II

But I,—a wavelet happier far,
The star itself came down to me.
19
Beyond Expression's warmest bound;
'Twas Earthly Beauty that I sought,
'Twas Heavenly Goodness that I found.
