University of Virginia Library

End Of The Day

It is the same day when you finally walk out
of the ward. There have been card games,
conversations both over successful and one sided,
and many strained moments. There has been
maybe one small fight, and innumerable
cigarettes rolled in a flash from a great bowl of
loose tobacco.

You might have gone over to the gym to
play some volleyball or basketball, with steps at
the snack bar coming and going. Your charge
may have run off to the library and resisted all
peaceful efforts to leave, aimlessly walking
down the aisles, pulling books down randomly
and leafing through them.

You are climbing back in the car to return
to Charlottesville, and you think of those little
messages from a nerve at the pit of your
stomach a short time before.

And suddenly it is one week later.

There will be a meeting of Western State
volunteers Wednesday, October 28 at 8 p.m. in
South Meeting Room of Newcomb Hall.
