Shannon Respects
Courteous Dissent

University of Virginia President Dr. Edgar F.
Shannon, declaring his "great faith" in the
students, says students pressing for change at
the school have done so in an orderly and
courteous way.

"The so-called demands that have been
widely publicized as coming from groups of
students, when transmitted to me by the
Student Council were described as proposals in
a courteous letter that requested my endorsement
with no deadline," Shannon told the
Charlottesville Rotary Club on Tuesday.

"I responded this afternoon to the effect
that University policies are in no way racist;
that about half the Student Council proposals
represent University policies already in effect;
that I needed further information on some
proposals and that I disagreed completely with
some proposals," Shannon said.
