THE SABATO GIFT
The President reported to the Board on a unique and special gift.
Larry J. Sabato, University Professor and Director of the Center for the Study of Politics, as a student thirty years ago, promised President Shannon that he would give a million dollars to the University. He has now pledged $1million to the University’s campaign to support the Center for Politics. The President noted that even though Mr. Sabato is legendary for his frugal lifestyle, his gift represents a tremendous personal sacrifice and a devotion to the University that is unmatched.
The President then read a letter from the Governor to Mr. Sabato that he had been asked to deliver.
Mr. Sabato, on the President’s invitation, spoke briefly and introduced two special guests: Ms. Eleanor Shannon Salem, the late President and Mrs. Shannon’s oldest daughter, and Mr. J. Sargeant Reynolds, Jr., son of the late Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth.
