No Chimes

No chimes have been heard
from the carillon of the
University chapel for the past
week due to a "serious
problem with electrical
power," according to
Psychology Prof. Raymond C.
Bice.

Mr. Bice said that when
such failures occur, he usually
fixes them himself. "I'm going
to make one more attempt to
do it myself this time. If it
fails, then a firm in
Pennsylvania will have to be
called in."

Planning to work with the
problem this weekend, Mr.
Bice said that it could be more
than two weeks before the
chimes are heard again if the
Pennsylvania firm must be
called.

Mr. Bice, who is nationally
renowned for his perfection of
a hearing device, redesigned the
bell system two years ago,
putting a cabinet around the
bells and adding a
dehumidifier.

Before it was redesigned,
the system broke on the
average of once every six
weeks. The carillon has
operated much more
efficiently since Mr. Bice's
addition.
