RUSKIN, John (1819-1900):

English ROMANTIC essayist and critic of INDIVIDUALISM and INDUSTRIALIZATION whose work Unto This Last (1862) influenced TOLSTOY and GANDHI. He rejected CHRISTIANITY and espoused a MYSTICAL FORM of SOCIALISM which glorified the past as an alternative.
