As senseless as a log—
I much prefer my nights to spend,
A happy ranting dog,
And see dull care his front unbend

The life of man's a season drear,
Immersed in mist and fog,
Until the star of wit appear,
And set its clouds agog.
For me, I wish no brighter sky
Than o'er a jug of grog,
When fancy kindles in the eye,
The good gray eye of Hogg.
