SONNET.
Are these dead roses what the glowOf vanish'd summers promis'd me?
When, budding on their virgin tree
As pure as after-winter's snow
These wither'd blossoms 'gan to blow
As harbingers of sweets to be?
For, looking closely, I could see
The bursting flecks of whiteness, so...
Streaking the fulness of the green,
Seeming a bright foreshadowing
As gleams of sunlight smile between
The thunder-showers of the spring.
Behold my promise! it has been
Fulfilled in this poor shrivell'd thing!
