Beyond a cloud of pines the chambers stood
Where toiled Pygmalion. Loftily they rose
And widely stretched; by the curved pathway grew
Laurel alternately with honoured bay
On either side in pairs: between each pair
An oleander gorgeous in the bloom
Of rosy light gladdened the massive green:
While flanking all gigantic cypresses
And olives huge in gnarled antiquity
Made an elysium for the birds of heaven.
