TECHNICAL TERMS IN NOH

    Shite (pronounced "Sch'tay"):

  • The hero or chief
    character.
  • Tsure:

  • The follower of the hero.
  • Waki:

  • Guest or guests, very often a wandering
    priest.
  • Waki no tsure, or Wadzure:

  • Guest's attendant.
  • Tomo:

  • An insignificant attendant.
  • Kogata:

  • A very young boy.
  • Kiogenshi:

  • Sailor or servant.
  • Hannya:

  • An evil spirit.

The speaking part of Noh is called "Kataru,"
the singing parts "Utai."
