Epig. 11. The Invention of Letters.
Tradition tells us that the Elephant,(Made up of sence like man, who nought doth want
Save speech) the Alphabet did first invent,
At this some laugh, and others to't assent,
Voting its veritie, but some contest
That Cadmus first found Letters, and expre'st
His Art first in Campania, if the first
Found out that milk by which all arts are nur'st,
I dare Decree the Beasts expressions all,
Were figured forth in letters Capitall.
