COMFORT IN TROUBLE.

“For he doth not afflict willingly.”—Lam. iii. 33.

Blessed be God! He is not strict
Our follies to requite.
He doth not willingly afflict,
Or in our groans delight.
With long forbearance He endures
Those who His wrath defy;
While to His saints the Cross secures
A glorious amnesty.
Despise not, then, His chastening,
Nor faint beneath His rod.
Errands of love our trials bring,
To lead us back to God.
Good Lord! our doubts and murmurs chase.
That we may look above,
And, when Thy ways we cannot trace,
Still trust Thy covenant love.
