Weekend Wisdom
How in the world can anyone expect us to get serious
enough to write an editorial on Easters Weekend? Here
we are, hopelessly in the throes of the most gala event
in a year of serious and grueling academic endeavor,
and we are supposed to take time out from our refreshment
to be didactic. Nothing can seem so inappropriate
on so happy an occasion as anything didactic or even
anything less than frivolous. If we are to maintain our
editorial dignity, however, we must not allow ourselves
the luxury of such frivolity, and so we will attempt to
make a few pertinent remarks.
We hope the fraternities will assume the responsibility
trusted in them by the IFC and control their parties
tonight and tomorrow afternoon. If they fail to do so,
then the new closed party rule will have be rescinded
and we will have to go through the mess of finding a
suitable replacement all over again. Independents, IFC
president Ed Hayes advises you to try only to get into
houses where you know someone, but we predict and
hope that you will be able to get into many houses where
you do not know someone; we do know, however, of
some houses who will bar the door to you if you don't
know anyone, so good luck.
No one who dared to venture onto Mad Lane Sunday
afternoon of last year's Easters can forget the near
riot conditions that existed there then. All in the name
of fun, the partiers drafted innocent passers-by into their
fun by such tricks as rumbling their cars, soaking them
with hoses, breaking their windshields, etc. One little
draftee was even seen indignantly wielding a broken
bottle against his offenders. As a result of it all, a number
of fraternities were placed on "Sunday party probation."
We hope all would-be jubilants can refrain from such
excesses this year lest the "image of fraternities at the
University of Virginia" be completely mutilated.
Along the same lines, this is Garden Week, so it
behooves the fraternities to keep their gardens and grounds
in as attractive shape as possible in order not to offend
any touring botanists who might be in the area. If you
are not careful in this respect, the Garden Club just
might come along and pick up your trash for you, which
should be embarrassing for any Cavalier.
Whatever the case, we hope everyone will enjoy the
rest of weekend and emerge safe (and alive) on Monday.
If so, we are sure that we can be sure then that, indeed,
a good time was had by all, if you will, which is the
purpose of the weekend to begin with, as it were.
