X.

Why sound the clarions far and wide,
Why kneel the chiefs on either side?
St. George's banner onward guiding
The noon-breeze in its strength dividing,
In broad and beautiful display
Proclaims the dark-mail'd Victor's way.

The radiance of his lance afar
Beam'd like the sparkle of a star,
That glances through the gloom of night:
And, like the eagle's wing on flight,
The plumage o'er his helm of gold
Spread to the gale its feathers bold.
