WHAT IS MAN?

O son of Man! O Creature of a Day!
Proud of vain Wisdom, with false Greatness gay!
Heir of thy Father's Vice, to whose bad Store
Thy guilty Days are spent in adding more;
Thou propagated Folly!—What in Thee
Cou'd Heav'n's Supreme, cou'd perfect Wisdom see,
To fix one Glance of his regarding Eye?
Why art Thou chose the Favourite of the Sky?
While Angels wonder at the Mercy known,
And scarce the Wretch himself, the Debt immense will own!
