VIII.

Santa Maria Novella's Church, hard by,
Calling its worshippers to morning prayer,
From its old Campanile lifted high
In the dull dampness of the clouded air,
Poured out its monotones, and did not spare
Its ringing shocks of unremitting sound,
That soon my warbler's notes were swept away and drowned.
