The massive intervention
which occurred under
President Johnson in 1965 was
done in order to prevent North
Vietnam; supported by the
Soviet Union and China, from
cutting South Vietnam in two
and the crushing the South
Vietnamese government and the
non-communist government in
Laos. Even Indonesia under
Sukarno saw the handwriting
and moved toward an alliance
with Hanoi and Peking.
