Hayes Motion

The decision was reached to
reconsider the requirement after
the committee received a letter
from President Shannon urging it to
rescind the motion.

Bill Buck, chairman of the IFC
housing committee, said, "I feel it
was a wise move made by the
Housing Committee to rescind its
decision on the sprinkler system.
Much pressure was brought to bear
upon the situation; I do not think
the administration buckled under
the pressure, but re-evaluated the
problem wisely."

The motion was made by Mr.
Hayes and seconded by D. Alan
Williams, Dean for Student Affairs.
Approval of the motion was not
unanimous, however. There was
also a motion to study the
feasibility of the installation of
alarm systems in the three-story
houses. This motion was also
passed, although a feeling of the
price being similar to that of the
sprinkler system existed.

The Housing Committee's
decision to require student housing
to install sprinkler systems was
initiated four years ago when it
passed a resolution concerning a
long-range plan for the installation
of the systems. The plan called for
the completion of the systems in
the fail of 1969. This year, the
Housing Committee reminded the
owners of the housing, including the
fraternities, and the debate ensued.
