| The Works of Peter Pindar [i.e. John Wolcot] | ||
‘Ah! Peter, Peter,’ Laureat Thomas cries,
‘Thou hast no fear of kings before thy eyes;
Great—little—all with thee are equal jokes,
And mighty monarchs merely common folks.
Ah wicked, wicked, wicked Peter, know—’
Know what? ‘That monarchs are not merely show;
Souls they possess, and on a glorious scale:’
To this I answer, Thomas, with a tale.
