V.
PSYCHE AND MERCURY

ONE OF RAPHAEL'S FRESCOES

A face of moulded mystery that combines
All sweet expression in one perfect whole,
All lights and shadows of my lady's soul:
Chiefly the rippling laugh that softly shines
Across the corresponding facial lines.
Gaze with intensity! Why I could swear
I've seen it move as I was standing there,
And look to me and speak to me by signs.
It is my lady's face made pure for ever
By the undying power of perfect art.
So Dante, with wild passionate endeavour,
Portrayed the endless mistress of his heart,—
As her image gleamed beyond the seas that sever
The immortal from our transitory part.
