The Sleep

I laid me down, and slept.
And I awaked. The long night thro'
My pulse its rhythm unconscious kept;
Unconscious breath I drew.
O Lord, it was not I
Who wrought this marvel unaware.
I slept, for Thou unseen wast nigh—
Awaked, for Thou wast there.
