The following resolution was adopted:

• RESOLVED that the actions relating to chairholders are hereby approved as shown below:
• (a) Election of Chairholders
• Mr. Paul Barolsky as Commonwealth Professor of Art History, effective July 1, 1996.
• Mr. David C. Brydges as Commonwealth Professor of Mathematics, effective July 1, 1996.
• Dr. Robert E. McLaughlin as S. Ward Cassells Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, effective March 1, 1996.
• Mr. David O'Brien as Leone Reaves and George W. Spicer Professor of Government and Foreign Affairs, effective July 1, 1996.
• Mr. Robert O'Connell as John Downman Hamilton Professor of Astronomy, effective April 1, 1996.
• Mr. Brian Parshall as Gordon Thomas Whyburn Professor of Mathematics, effective July 1, 1996.

The following retirements were announced:

• Mr. Paul R. Gross, University Professor of Life Sciences, effective August 31, 1996. Mr. Gross has been a member of the faculty since October 15, 1986.
• Mr. Ray C. Hunt, Jr., F.S. Cornell Professor of Free Enterprise, effective May 31, 1996. Mr. Hunt has been a member of the faculty since June 3, 1957.
• Mr. Lionel I. Rebhun, Commonwealth Professor of Biology, effective June 1, 1996. Mr. Rebhun has been a member of the faculty since September 1, 1968.
• Ms. Sandra W. Scarr, Commonwealth Professor of Psychology, effective May 31, 1996. Ms. Scarr has been a member of the faculty since September 1, 1983.
• Mr. Tsung Y. Shen, Alfred Burger Professor of Biological and Medicinal Chemistry, effective May 31, 1996. Mr. Shen has been a member of the faculty since September 1, 1986.
• Mr. Samuel J. Taylor, Gordon Thomas Whyburn Professor of Mathematics, effective June 30, 1996. Mr. Taylor has been a member of the faculty since August 1, 1984.
