SAINTS VALERIAN AND CECILIA.

(DIED A.D. 230.)

The eyes that loved me were upon me staying:
The eyes that loved me, and the eyes that won:
Guardian or guide celestial saw I none;
But the unseen chaplets on her temples weighing
Breathed heaven around! A golden smile was playing
O'er the full lips. Meekly her countenance shone,
And beamed, a lamp of peace 'mid shadows dun—
Round her lit form the ambrosial locks were swaying.
Fair Spirit! Angel of delight new-born
And love, unchanging love and infinite,
Aurorean planet of the eternal morn!
That gaze I caught; and, standing in that light,
My soul, from Pagan bonds released by thee,
Upsoared, and hailed its immortality.
