So did the sire and son hold their discourse,
Meeting in love, but haply e'er they left
Wishing a wider room between their lives
For their love's likelier growth—lest having lost
Already its main substance, it should lose
Even its show, in bickering sullenness,
Sinking from chill to cold—meeting thenceforth
As shadows meet, darkly, ungenially,
And so pass scowling by.
