[“Poor Mary” was Mary Batty, of Skipton,—a fair pupil of mine.]

In spring, alas! poor Mary dies,
Ere many springs have found her;
An early-blighted flower she lies,
When all is blooming round her!

Yet consolation gilds the tear
With which her fate we ponder:
She never caused a sorrow here,
And ne'er will meet one yonder!
