Woe to proud Algiers; to your princes woe!
Your pride is perish'd with your youths laid low—
Woe to ye people! woe, distress, and fears!
Your hour is come to drink the cup of tears:
A ghastly paleness gathers on your cheeks,
While mem'ry haunts your cars with captive shrieks;
Then stifled conscience wak'ning dares to cry,
“Think on your crimson crimes, despair and die!”—
Then ruin comes, with fire, and sword, and blood,
And men shall ask, “where once your cities stood?”
