LITERARY SOCIETIES.

There are two Literary Societies (the "Washington Society" and the
"Jefferson Society") of long standing, connected with the University.
They meet weekly in their respective halls for the purpose of cultivating
debate and composition, and hold public exhibitions at intervals during
the session, and at its close. Each Society bestows medals on its best
debaters, and the two Societies in conjunction give a medal to the best
writer in the Students' Magazine, maintained by them.
