Defense Strong

Booters Need Offensive Go

By Ted McKean

Coach Gordon Burris
ever-improving booters present one
of the University's most promising
soccer squads that can be
remembered in recent years.
Despite losing records over the past
two seasons, Burris has carefully
built a nucleus of experienced
players which may yield the
vaunted winning season.

The competition will once again
be stiff. North Carolina, North
Carolina State, and Maryland again
appear on the schedule, and they
can be counted on to field teams
replete with a number of
scholarship players. Virginia offers
no scholarships for soccer, placing
the Cavaliers at a disadvantage
before they step onto the field.

It was offensive punch that the
Virginia side lacked last season.
Hopefully, this problem will be
remedied this year, by several
incoming first-year men whom
Burris will be counting heavily
upon. Specifically, two first-year
men will probably find themselves
at the critically important inside
spots.

Seven lettermen return, most of
whom composed the powerful
Cavalier defense. Third-year goalie
Danny Abramson will shoulder a
heavy responsibility as the defense's
"last Man," a job which he very
capably handled last year. Mike
Sorensen, Carter Gunn, and Russ
Ketcham, all veterans, form the
fullback line.

At the halfback positions will
again be Mike Ross, John Taylor,
and John Bakhaus. Holdovers Bob
Aronson and Jeff DuBrow will be
out on the wings.

In Burris' estimation, last year's
squad concentrated too much on its
defense, and in order to in games,
more goals will have to be
produced. Training thus far this fall
has been more offensively- orient
with the hope that the dearly
sought after scores will come a little
more frequently this season.

The season opens against V.P.I.
on October 2.
