Big Five Contest

Indians Host Cavaliers

By TOM BELL

After a somewhat
disappointing showing in the
national polls, the Cavaliers,
led by ACC Player of the Week
Barry Parkhill, swing back into
action tonight when they face
William and Mary in
Williamsburg in the first of
three straight games against
state Big Five opponents.

The team reached the top
twenty in the Associated Press
writers' poll, as they barely
sneaked into the nineteenth
position, and were shut out in
the United Press International
coaches' poll. Many
Charlottesville speculators had
thought the Cavaliers would
reach the top fifteen as a result
of wins over Maryland and
Baldwin-Wallace last week.

Parkhill, who scored 21
points in the Maryland upset
and a set a school record of 51
against Baldwin-Wallace, was
named the conference's top
performer by a committee of
the ACC Sportswriters
Association. He has scored 112
points in four games for a
28-point average.

The Cavaliers start their
efforts toward winning their
third straight Big Five
championship tonight. The
past two years they have won
the title in tournament play,
but there will be no tourney
this season, so the
championship will be decided
by regular season play. Games
against VMI and Richmond
will be played next week in

Roanoke, while Virginia Tech,
the fifth Big Five team, will
visit University Hall on
February 7.

William and Mary has been
hurt by graduation losses of
Tom Jasper and Steve Dodge,
both standout performers, and
also by pre-season losses of two
newcomers who were expected
to help.

Barry Parkhill

ACC Player Of Week

Last season the Cavaliers
topped the Indians 107-86 in
University Hall, as they had
their highest scoring total of
the season.

Parkhill dominates the
four-game Cavalier statistics
released Monday. He leads in
points with 112, assists with
20, shots made and attempted
(47 for 87), foul shots made
and attempted (18 for 23), and
turnovers (10).

Forward Jim Hobgood is
second in scoring with 64
points for a 16.0 average,
followed by Co-captains Scott
McCandlish (45 points, 11.2
average) and Frank Dewitt (38
points, 9.8 average).

Ten of the 12 Cavalier
players are averaging more than
five points per game, and all
but one of the players has
participated in every game,
showing Coach Bill Gibson's
increased reliance on his bench
this season.

McCandlish leads all
rebounders with 40, followed
by Hobgood with 32, and
DeWitt with 21.

The Cavaliers have
outscored opponents by an
average of 98.5 to 74.2 and
out rebounding them 45.2 to
37.5. They have hit on 53.2
percent of their shots while
opponents have hit on 47.1.

Tonight's opponents are
both leaders in their respective
conferences, both with 2-0
records. The Cavaliers are atop
the ACC with wins over Duke
and Maryland, while the
Indians lead the Southern
Conference with triumphs over
pre-season favorites Furman
and The Citadel.

The game will be played in
brand new William and Mary
Hall which has 8,800 seats.

The Cavayearlings do not
play tonight in Williamsburg,
having closed out
pre-Christmas action last night
against the University of
Richmond freshmen in the
preliminary of the
Richmond-Davidson game.
Their next action will be Jan 8
against N.C. State.

Game time tonight in
Williamsburg is 8:00.
