HOW ABOUT IT?

WITH E. RUFUS DEMPSEY

This afternoon, amidst the joyous festivities of Openings
Weekend, a possibly long rivalry between Virginia and
Colgate will be established on the Scott Stadium gridiron. The Red
Raiders from Hamilton, N.Y. would be a refreshing Southern Wahoo
football schedule.

It would be most desirable to not be forced to view a repetition of
last year's absurd Openings to Wake Forest. In fact, one has to look far
into the past in order to find an errorless Virginia football effort. We
should hope to see one this afternoon, especially after last weekend's
loss to N.C.State. The Colgate Marooners, although presently on top of
a three-game winning streak, have been defeated by such an
unimpressive team as Navy, and could go down if the Wahoos re-acquire
their Army-game spirit.

This afternoon will mark the next-to-last appearance of several
fourth-year standouts. Here they are...

CO-CAPTAIN DAN RYCZEK...All-Conference at Mention High
School in Cleveland...has been a starter for every game for last two
seasons... should be one of the best in the Conference..."has
outstanding leadership qualities"...had trouble with punt snaps last year
but has corrected with long practice sessions...is majoring in finance.

*CO-CAPTAIN PAUL "DEACON" REID...linebacker...All-state
quarterback from North Plainfield (New Jersey) High School...started
most of second-year season and every game last year...views football as
a game of 'sacrifice, mental awareness, and a desire to pay the price.'

*ALL-AMERICAN CANDIDATE RANDY LESTYK...played one
year of high school football...tackle...always considered himself too
small for participation...led defensive unit last year with 78 tackles...at
6-1, 245, has grown each year in size and stature...from Butler, Pa.

*ED KIHM...defensive end...from Westlake, Ohio...All-Starter in
high school...considered one of the best all-around athletes on the
squad...good speed with ability to maneuver sharply at top speed...top
pitcher on baseball team for two years...has made Dean's List in
Education.

*BOB BISCHOFF... end...from Richmond...All Capital and
Metropolitan in high school...Cavaliers' top receiver in 1969 with 35
receptions for 498 yards and one touchdown...4.8 speed in 40-yard
dash with full equipment...definite pro prospect and should receive
post-season honors in 1970.

*JIM SHANNON...guard...from Petersburg, Va...All-State and
All-District in high school...started every game last season...held out one
year...best interior backer...called "Dog" by his teammates because of
his desire and tenacity.

*ANDY MINTON...defensive tackle..from Charlottesville...All-State
and All-Valley at Albemarle...two-year letterman and 20-game starter
for varsity...has intercepted eight passes - four in each season...has the
tools, ability, and experience to be one of the best in the conference.

So welcome alumni! You're back to see a fighting eleven take the
field for the old Orange and Blue, maybe to see them down the Red
Raiders for the first time. Hopefully, it will be an inspired team that
George Blackburn puts on the battlefield for the long-awaited Colgate
fray.
