A Gourmet's Alphabetical Guide To Charlottesville

By FEN MONTAIGNE
and TIM WHEELER

(Ed. Note-This review is
merely the opinion of two of
the thirteen thousand students
at the University, but in our
hearts (and in our stomachs),
we know we're right. Those
restaurants ot mentioned have
not been visited by the
writers.)

Angus Barn–great steaks,
good atmosphere, but bring
along a lot of money.

Arby's Roast
Beef
–expensive, overrated,
rubbery roast beef (and besides
that, there's too much ice in
their cokes.)

Archie's Pizza–one of our
friends in the restaurant
business said–"There are no
good pizzas in Charlottesville."
If you want to eat bad pizza,
don't eat it at Archie's–it's too
expensive.

Barnaby's–an average pizza
at slightly above average prices.

Boars Head Inn–If money is
no object, then by all means,
"dine" here.

CK Steak House–on the
Corner. We think this is one of
the most underrated
restaurants in Charlottesville.
The food is good, the service is
good, and so is the price.

The Caravan–one of the
many greasy stand-up burger
joints that have aesthetically
ruined Route 29 North.

Checker's Pizza & Spaghetti

House–the player piano and
long wooden benches make an
average pizza taste good.

Chili Shoppe–a refreshing
addition to the Corner's
generally uninspiring cast of
eateries. Chili is spicy, but
good, and the hamburgers
aren't bad. The prices are good,
and their Coney Island Dog is a
real bargain.

College Inn–the food is
bland, but decent, fluorescent
lights are bright, the waitresses
are friendly. On the Corner.

Expresso International
Restaurant–good Greek and
Italian food. In our opinion,
the "best" pizza in town. Be
sure to wear shoes.

Fiji Island–the exotic
rum-ridden drinks are great.
The menu is equally exotic,
featuring Oriental and
Polynesian delights. The
bamboo and the leis make the
food rather expensive, but the
Fiji Island deserves at least one
visit.

Hardee's–where the burgers
are charcoal-broiled, paper
thin, and tasteless.

Howard Johnson's–if you
don't die while waiting for
your food, chances are you will
after you've eaten it.

Ken Johnson
Cafeteria
–Charlottesville's
second-best cafeteria. In the
Barracks Road Shopping
Center.

Kettle Pancake House–the
atmosphere is plastic and
oppressive. Service is slow,
food is poor–stay away if you
can.

The King's Table–fine food
(with the exception of the
lobster) and medieval
atmosphere, all for a king's
ransom. The Parlor, their
newly opened bar, has been
recommended to us.

La Hacienda–unfortunately,
the only Mexican restaurant
in Charlottesville. If you've
ever had real Mexican food
before, you'll be sorely
disappointed. If, however,
you'd like a close
approximation to Mexican
food, give La Hacienda a try.

The Library(downstairs)
vastly overpriced, but their
spaghetti specials are good.

Lord Hardwicke Inn–We
like it. Steaks and hamburgers
are good, the atmosphere is
dark and quiet. Stay away
from the salads - they're too
expensive.

Lupo's–the only thing
going for Lupo's is their
delivery service.

MacDonald's–MacDonald's,
is taking its place alongside
Mom and apple pie.

Michie Tavern–a good,
square meal of chicken and
vegetables at a reasonable
price. A must stop after visiting
Monticello. Only serving from
11:30-3 p.m..

Monticello Hotel–we
recommend their Friday night
seafood buffet. A strictly
dress up affair.

The Pancake House–Sarge
whips up a great batch of
pancakes. On 29 North.

The Pit Barbecue–greasy,
but good.

The Pizza Hut–they use
cardboard for crusts and
bubblegum for cheese.

Poe's–Poe's is known for its
beer. Great atmosphere,
though.

Shoney's–neon food. Don't
waste your time.

Snoopy's Ice Cream
Parlor
–an ice cream parlor that
doesn't have much in the way
of ice cream.

That Steak Place–their
steaks and salad bar are superb,
but avoid the lobster. Highly
recommended, 'classy'.

University Cafeteria–the
best for the money in
Charlottesville. If you plan to
eat here regularly, purchase
their $100 coupon book.

University
Diner
- moderately priced
grease. Ask for the infamous
"Grillzwith" and "One-Eye",

Village Inn–if you like
pinball, go. If you like good
food, don't.

The Virginian–generally,
the food is lousy. Once in a
while, though, their specials are
worth eating.

The White Spot–if your
grease tolerance is especially
high, give the White Spot a go.
