Glorious Eleven Ready For Red Raiders

Mittmen Tackle Tar Heels

To a true ring enthusiast the smell
of sawdust on the floor and the crisp
sound of leather-on-leather can mean
only one thing; the University boxing
team is practicing again. This reporter
caught them in the act yesterday and
came out with bright prospects for the
pugilistic season.

Since organized boxing hasn't
existed here at the University since the
early fifties there are no returning
lettermen on which ring mentor Lucas
Lampz can pyramid a winning season
but, down among the boxers at
practice, this reporter didn't have to
look hard to find optimism.

The team's potential stars include
Big Bill Vanderbunt, our
ACC-contending heavyweight, who
tips, or should I say, crushes the scales
at 226¼ pounds. This week Big Bill has
been emphasizing both the light bag
and speedwork.

Also eyeing a conference crown is
Cavalier middleweight Tim "Corky"
Benzedrine. Corky hails from right
here in The Ville and credits all his
prior experience to impromptu set-tos
on Water Street. Coach Lampz credits
him with having "tons of heart and
hustle."

Fighting first on tomorrow's
UNC-UVA card will be our Battlin'
Bantamweight Harry "The Flea"
Boykin. And what a story this is! The
Flea is competing against doctor's
orders after just completing a
twelve-week stay at the University
Hospital for a severe but brief siege of
loses out there against UNC he deserves
your support.

Our opponent, the University of
North Carolina, is among our most
traditional and our most hated rivals,
spinal meningitis. Whether he wins or
Nothing so warms the heart of a
Virginian as much as a win over a Tar
Heel, so come on down to University
Hall tomorrow and top off your
Openings weekend with some first class
fisticuffs.
