First-Year Program To Hire
Additional Resident Advisors
By CINDI STUART
Additional counselors will
be hired for next year's
first-year resident program
program as a result of the
status change i Dunnington
and Tuttle dormitories from
upperclass to first-year dorms.
According to First Year
Program Co-Chairmen,
third-year College students
Janet Palmer and Stuart Ball,
counselors were purposely
underassigned until the exact
number of counselors needed
was determined.
"Centaur" Program
Among suggested changes
for next year's program is the
assignment of faculty members
to each hall. This "Centaur"
program is designed to
establish social as well as
academic relationship among
the students and faculty
"centaurs." A "centuar",
explained Miss Palmer, was a
teacher in ancient mythology.
"The possibilities for this
program are as of yet
untapped," said Mr. Ball in
concerning the program which
has been tried on a similar basis
at Stanford University and
Bowling Green College. "We
envision such things as students
having dinner with the faculty
members or a 'sherry hour.'"
The Centaur program
would replace the present
first-year seminar through
frequent meetings between the
students and faculty. Directed
reading courses will be offered,
including a proposed discussion
during Orientation Week on a
novel assigned to all incoming
first-year students during the
summer.
Favorable Response
"It is necessary to establish an
academic atmosphere as well as
a social one during
Orientation," said Miss Palmer.
"In past years Orientation has
been just play."
Although the Centaur
program is still in the planning
stages, it has received favorable
response from faculty
questionnaires.
Awaiting approval by the
Board of Visitors, institution
of the RAC Fund looks
optimistic, according to Mr.
Ball.
Three Students
Three students have been
appointed to the Upperclass
Resident Staff as a result of the
changeover from graduate to
upperclass students in Monroe
Hill dorms. Robert Norrell and
Carolyn Schoen received
counseling positions at Monroe
Hill. Danny Basnight was
appointed to the Alderman
Road dorms and Robert Moore
was named a senior resident.
