Merrill, Allen, Moore
Awarded For Teaching
University medical students presented
three awards for outstanding
teaching Saturday night at the
Mulholland Society's second annual
hall in Alumni Hall.
Robert E. Merrill, associate
professor of pediatrics, received the
Robley Dunglison Award presented
each year by the medical school's
graduating class to a member of the
clinical staff. The award is named
for the original member of the
University's medical faculty, a
British scholar who also was
Thomas Jefferson's personal physician.
The Robert Bennett Bean
Award for excellence in teaching in
the basic medical sciences was
presented to Miller S. Allen Jr.,
associate professor of pathology.
Established last year by the Mulholland
Society, the medical student
association, the award is in honor
of Dr. Bean, a noted anthropologist
and chairman of the anatomy
department here from 1916 to
1942.
Rick A. Moore, assistant resident
in medicine, received the
James E. Kindred Award presented
by the graduating class to a member
of the house staff. This award is
named for Dr. Kindred
Dr. Merrill, who came to the
University in 1966, is medical
coordinator of the Children's Rehabilitation
Center and project
director of the Children's Multiple
Handicap Diagnostic and Treatment
Evaluation Center. He earned his
bachelor's degree at Tulane University
and his M.D. at Vanderbilt
University.
