Michaels, Merritt Snag Top Awards

Two sport letterman Kevin
Michaels gained top honors at
the annual, Cavalier all-sports
banquet held in May.

The football linebacker and
wrestling captain from Sparta,
N.J., won the Senft award as
the most valuable wrestler and
the WCHV award as the
outstanding Virginia athlete.
Michaels also received the
Polzer award given by the
Cavalier Daily as the
outstanding athlete at the
University.

He and track star Kent
Merritt were also runner sup for
the ACC's McKevlin award as
the outstanding athlete.

In football, Billy Williams
was awarded for leadership and
cooperation, Dave Sullivan as
the most improved player,
Chuck Belic for exemplary
ability, sportsmanship and
character, Bill Farrell as best
blocker, Rick Duffalo for the
highest scholastic average and
Tom Kennedy for academic
excellence.

Chip Williams was selected
most valuable player in soccer.

Barry Parkhill and Bob
McKeag were selected as the
most valuable and most
improved players respectively
in basketball, while Al
Drummond was awarded for
his foul efficiency.

In swimming, Jerry Rollins
was honored for academic
excellence and Allen Ettenger
for leadership.

In baseball, Dave Bratt was
selected as both the
outstanding player and that
player with the best baseball
ability. Dan Bernstein was
awarded for enthusiasm, desire
and team dedication.

Kent Merritt was termed
the best sprinter in the state
and Phil Meyer as the most
valuable trackster. Phil Meyer
was also honored by the
Atlantic Coast Conference for
excellence in scholarship and
by the Seven Society as the top
scholar athlete.

Mike Mozur was awarded
for his victory in the University
Open Golf Tournament while
King Oehmig was selected the
golf team's most valuable
player.

for his selection as first
