University Avenue Proposal

he said, "Three lanes of moving
traffic would increase the risk
to pedestrians from that of two
moving lanes with parking on
the sides."

The three members for the
alternative and against the
widening of University Avenue
were Chairman Virginia Schatz,
Mary Jane Haynes and Page
Helson.

Mrs. Schatz said, "I feel like
I can support the three-lane
alternative that that will not
have an immediate impact and
will allow for future
alterations." "It will allow cars
and people to exist a little
more happily on a road that is
not that desirable right now."

At one point, it was unclear
whether City Traffic Engineer
Hugo Malango on the Planning
Commission had changed the
plan for the corner of Jefferson
Park Avenue and West Main
Street. At the work session on
December 21 the corner on
Plan B had included an island.
However, there was no island
included on the plan at
Tuesday's meeting.

It was finally determined
that Mr. Malanga had changed
it due to the dissatisfaction of
the Planning Commission.

From the audience, Student
Council Secretary Bill Huyett
tried to comment on the
change to the corner of
Jefferson Park Avenue.
However, he was ruled out of
order by Mrs. Schatz who
would not permit the
public to give statements at
this meeting.

Mr. Huyett replied by
saying, "You are ignoring the
University point of view." Mrs.
Schatz suggested that he go to
City Council with his
objection.

Commenting on the
changed intersection after the
meeting, Mr. Huyett said he
was not allowed to talk on a
crucial question. "It was the
crucial question whether or not
you're going to put traffic on
University Avenue or whether
you're going to re-route around
the University.

"The student body, the
faculty, everybody at the
University, except maybe some
of the administrators feel that
University Avenue should not
be increased in traffic. They
(the Planning Commission) did
not let the University speak to
that question," said Mr.
Huyett.

Mr. Huyett said he would
like to see the commission
"leave University Avenue the
way it is and re-route the
traffic some place else."
