Anette Gibbs

Two new associate deans of
students and revised nomenclature
in the chain of
command will provide the new
blood for the University administration
this fall.

Designated with the responsibility
for the welfare of the
arriving women students in the
position of associate dean of
students Miss Anette Gibbs will
begin her first term at the
University. Miss Gibbs was
formerly the dean of students
at Troy State University in
Alabama, and will now serve
with Robert Canevari in the
office of the dean of students.
Also serving in the dean of students
office this year will be Chester R.
Titus former director of housing,
who will direct the University's
residence hall programs, including
counselor and head resident programs.

Both Miss Gibbs and Mr. Titus
receive their Ph.D's this year, Miss
Gibbs in higher education at
Florida State; and Mr. Titus at
Michigan State. The two will be
offering their services to students
this fall.

As for other positions in the
administration President Edgar
Shannon will be returning for his
thirteenth year in the number one
position. Mr. Shannon was
appointed the fourth president of
the University in 1959. He is a
graduate of Washington and Lee
University and a Rhodes scholar at
Oxford University.

Mr. Shannon formerly served on
the Board of Visitors of the United
States Naval Academy and on the
Governing Board of the Air Force
Academy. He is now a member of
the Southern Regional Education
Board and is President of the
Council of Southern Universities.

Assisting Mr. Shannon especially
in the area of student affairs will be
D. Alan Williams who will fill the
newly created post of Vice President
in Charge of Student Affairs.
Mr. Williams formerly the Dean of
Student affairs is a magna cum lade
of Westminster college and received
his masters and Fh.D. at Northwestern
University.

He came to the University in
1957 and later was an associated
professor specialising in the history
of Virginia and Colonial America.
Since then he has served as director
of the Echols Scholar program,
Assistant dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences and assistant
provost of the University.

Serving as the Dean of Faculty
will be David Shannon, former
chairman of the history departments
at Maryland and Rutgers. Mr.
Shannon is a specialists in 20th
century American History; he
received his B.S. at the University
of Wisconsin. He has written extensively
on the Socialist and
Communist Parties in America.

Ernest Ern, formerly assistant
dean of the College of Arts and
Sciences will reenter his post as
dean of Admissions.

Robert Canevari, former Assistant
dean of Student affairs will
become the Dean of Students this
fall and will share his office with
Miss Gibbs and Mr. Titus. Mr.
Canevari received his B.S. in education
in 1960 and his Master's in
1964 from the University.
