Echols Scholars Begin Program

Sixty-one first-year students
launch their academic careers at the
University this semester as members
of the College's Echols Scholars
program.

Inaugurated in 1960, the
program is designed to challenge
and stimulate "exceptionally able"
entering students selected on the
basis of College Board scores,
secondary school records, and
evidence that they "can contribute
to, as well as benefit from, an
intellectual and social community."

During their first year at the
University, the Scholars will live
and work together in Echols House,
seeking to create a modern version
of Mr. Jefferson's "academical
village."

The primary distinguishing
characteristic of the Echols
Scholars Program is its flexibility.
The course of study of each Scholar
is designed, in personal conference
with the Associate Dean, to give
full stimulation to his individual
interests and abilities.
