Meyer, Merritt Shine In State Track Meet

By STEVE GASKE

Phil Meyer and Kent
Merritt stole the show at the
Virginia State Indoor Track
Championships at VMI
Wednesday, but William and
Mary continued to its
domination of the team title.

The Indians won seven of
the 18 events, including the
high jump, 2-mile relay,
60-yard high hurdles, 60-yard
low hurdles, 1,000, 880, and
mile.

With 96 points, W&M
outdistanced its nearest
challenger, Virginia Tech by 39
points.

Meyer, by far the
outstanding performer in the
meet, won the 3-mile in a state
record of 13:59.4.

He then turned around and
broke the 2-mile record with a
time of 9:03,2, beating several
strong William and Mary
runners, but failing to make
the 8:48 cutoff time for
qualifying for the nationals.

Merritt has already
qualified for the nationals and
will be going to the NCAA
Championships at Detroit's
Cobo Arena March 9 and 10.

At Lexington Merritt won
the 60 in 6.2, his best time of
the season, after running 6.3 in
both of his qualifying heats. He
has run as fast as 6.0 and, with
another week to get in shape,
should be able to lower his
time at the nationals.

Julian Solotrovsky ran a
1:13.6 in the 600 to place
third for the Cavs. After
recording the fastest qualifying
time, Solotrovsky was slowed
down in the finals when a
runner fell and forced him to
detour, losing several steps.

Another bright spot for the
Cavs was first-year man Tom
Freshwater who placed second
in the triple jump, despite a
minor ankle injury.

Tech was led by two record
setters, Tony Bertovich (47'8")
in the 35-pound weight throw,
and Tony Fleshman (23'3") in
the long jump.

Scoring for the meet was;
W&M, 96; VPI, 57; Richmond,
38; Virginia, 36; Virginia State,
27; VMI, 17; Roanoke, 10;
Bridgewater, 1.
